Dycom is seeking a technical, innovative, and analytical Tax Manager - State to be a valuable member of our great Tax team. You will contribute to designing fit for the future tax processes, work toward building a team of tax professionals of the future, be a change agent in our finance transformation, help solve business challenges related to business structuring, implement adoption of new tax laws, and communicate tax developments. You’ll determine our tax effects and recommend solutions that support our overall business objectives to ensure that our filing positions are consistent with good business practices and with the applicable tax laws and rules. Our goal is to transform risk and compliance related to taxes into a business advantage by aligning our tax plan with the business strategy; and to properly estimate and plan for the income tax accounting impacts.

What you’ll do

  • Manage the State income tax provision process to ensure technical accuracy and internal and external quarterly and annual reporting deadlines are met. This includes reviewing the calculation of blended tax rates, the state tax provision, taxes payable/receivable, uncertain tax positions, return-to-provision adjustments, state-specific deferred taxes, and assessing the need for a valuation allowance. 

  • Monitor and analyze proposed and enacted state tax legislation. Model the financial impact of the changes on the effective tax rate (ETR) and cash flow, providing proactive recommendations to leadership. Identify any process changes needed as a result.

  • Design and adhere to compliance with key SOX controls related to US tax accounting for all state and local tax items.

  • Manage and ensure the technical accuracy of corporate and partnership State tax returns and estimated payments.

  • Review and assist with investigating and resolving all state tax notices and audits with a favorable outcome.

  • Perform regular reviews of apportionment factors and nexus footprints across all states.

  • Identify and implement planning opportunities to optimize state tax liability.

  • Liaise with other corporate departments and with operating companies to ensure the tax effects of transactions and developments are appropriately captured in the State income tax provision and return.

  • Help improve the tax function to control risk and facilitate better decision making by increasing efficiencies and implementing automations utilizing digitization tools to reduce hours and optimize processes.

  • Act to resolve issues which prevent the team from working effectively and efficiently.

  • Manage a variety of viewpoints to build consensus and create positive outcomes for all parties.

  • Contribute to and help implement State tax strategies that best position the company to limit risk and increase post tax profits.

  • Assist with determining the State tax implications of planning strategies and transactions.

  • Effectively and efficiently research tax issues and document findings, form an opinion/conclusion, and provide meaningful recommendations.

  • Explain and present technical tax issues to senior management within the department.

  • Manage direct and indirect reports to ensure timely completion and appropriate workload distribution. Determine resource requirements.

  • Utilize software such as OneSource Tax Provision, OneSource Income Tax, and Alteryx to achieve best corporate tax practices.

  • Assist with accounts payable and billing tracking related to tax consultants.

  • Coordinate with outside service providers, as well as track status of projects to confirm accurate and timely completion of various tax deliverables. Escalate issues and appropriately resolve them with the partners.

What you’ll need

  • To be 18 years of age or older

  • Authorization to work in the United States for this company

  • Bachelor’s degree with accounting major. Masters in Tax is a plus

  • CPA license preferred

  • Minimum of 5+ years relevant work experience with a strong understanding of tax accounting (Federal and State) and State tax compliance rules and processes for publicly traded corporations

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office softwares, with advanced experience in Microsoft Excel using formulas and functions.

  • In depth experience utilizing tax research platforms such as CCH, BNA, etc.

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and travel (up-to 10%) when necessary

  • Working knowledge of OneSource Tax Provision and Income Tax is a plus

  • Experience with SAP, Alteryx, and AI systems is a plus

 

Additional qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the tax issues facing publicly traded US companies, especially in the areas of tax accounting, tax compliance, and tax planning from both a Federal and State tax perspective

  • Deep expertise in ASC 740, specifically regarding state income tax provision, state payable/receivable, state deferreds, valuation allowance assessments, and the accounting for uncertain tax positions (FIN 48)

  • Comprehensive technical skills in corporate and partnership tax planning and compliance, as well as tax accounting and financial reporting, including tax provision preparation, audit, and review from both a Federal and State and Local Tax perspective

  • Considerable experience identifying and addressing corporate tax needs from a state and local tax perspective

  • Deal effectively and efficiently with ambiguous and unstructured problems and situations, including devising a path to completion and achieving set goals

  • Position requires strong critical thinking, excellent analytical skills, interpersonal and project management skills, and acute attention to detail.

  • Deliver excellent verbal and written communication that is clear and structured, in a timely and professional manner. Frame communications appropriate to the audience.

  • Ability to lead discussions with senior management in a clear and concise manner, communicating risks and value propositions with respect to complex subjects

  • Work effectively and efficiently in a fast paced and changing environment. Adapt and redirect, as necessary

  • Must demonstrate experience in managing teams to create an atmosphere of trust

  • Experience with restructuring, due diligence, and/or audit defense is a plus

  • Routinely: Engage in standard office activities such as standing, sitting, and using computers for extended periods.

  • Occasionally: Travel domestically up to 10% to attend team meetings or training.
