The Fleet Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the company fleet maintenance shop, ensuring all vehicles, trailers, and equipment are maintained in a safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner. This position manages shop personnel, coordinates preventive maintenance and repairs, maintains regulatory compliance, controls downtime, and supports operational readiness across the fleet.
The Fleet Shop Manager works closely with Fleet Operations, Field Management, vendors, and drivers/operators to maintain high equipment availability and ensure all assets meet company and FMCSA safety standards.

What you’ll do
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance Operations
Oversee all day-to-day shop operations for company vehicles, trailers, and equipment
Manage preventive maintenance schedules and repair workflows
Ensure timely completion of inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance
activities
Prioritize work orders based on operational needs and equipment availability
Monitor asset downtime and implement strategies to improve uptime
Coordinate roadside service and emergency repairs when necessary
Maintain accurate maintenance records and repair histories
Team Leadership
Supervise shop technicians, mechanics, and support personnel
Assign daily work tasks and monitor productivity
Provide coaching, training, and performance management
Promote a strong safety culture and enforce company policies
Conduct shop meetings and communicate operational priorities
Compliance & Safety
Ensure fleet compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, ANSI, and company safety standards
Oversee annual DOT inspections and preventive maintenance documentation
Maintain records related to inspections, repairs, DVIRs, and compliance
Ensure shop equipment and tools are maintained and used safely
Assist with audit preparation and compliance reporting
Vendor & Parts Management
Coordinate with outside repair vendors and dealerships
Review estimates and approve repair work as authorized
Manage parts inventory and shop supplies
Monitor repair costs and identify cost-saving opportunities
Maintain relationships with vendors and service providers
Fleet Systems & Administration
Utilize fleet management software to track repairs, PM schedules, and asset history
Review Fleet Maintenance Requests (FMRs), DVIRs, and service documentation
Assist with budgeting and forecasting for maintenance expenses
Support asset replacement planning and lifecycle management
Operational Support
Coordinate with field operations regarding equipment availability
Assist with new vehicle upfits, equipment installs, and vendor coordination
Support accident response and repair coordination
Participate in fleet planning and operational strategy discussions

What you’ll need
Required
5+ years of fleet maintenance or heavy equipment maintenance experience
2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience
Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, trailers, and fleet systems
Knowledge of FMCSA/DOT compliance requirements
Experience managing preventive maintenance programs
Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information
Strong organizational and communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office and fleet maintenance software
Valid driver’s license
Preferred
Experience in construction, telecom, utility, or heavy equipment industries
CDL preferred but not required
ASE certifications or equivalent technical certifications
Experience managing mixed fleets including pickups, medium-duty trucks, trailers, and
specialty equipment
Familiarity with fleet management and telematics systems
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in a shop and outdoor environment
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods
Occasional travel to field locations or job sites may be required
Work Environment
Combination of office, maintenance shop, and field environments
May require after-hours availability for emergency fleet issues
